We should use http://www.swiftmailer.org/ as a replacement for PHPMailer. This is PHP5 compliant, in active development (unlike PHPMailer), extendable, faster, capable of mass mailing, etc. ...

Max, I don't know if you still want to take care of this, but I don't see any reason this should block 1.0. I'm not aware of any urgent issue with PHPMailer. Bumping to 1.1, which doesn't preclude you from doing it sooner ;)
